The 7 Chakras: Our Spiritual Energy Centers

by / Monday, 11 September 2017 / Published in Latest posts, Uncategorized

The word “chakra” is a Sanskrit word,
meaning “spinning wheel.”

They are “energy centers” situated along the central line of the body, and are considered part of our “spiritual anatomy.” Primarily, there are 7 chakras and they act as vortices that help to funnel our spirit into our body. They govern certain aspects of human experience while affecting the totality of our minds, bodies & spirits. From primal and survival needs like food & shelter all the way up to love for mankind, foresight and communication with God, these 7 chakras — when balanced — keep our life-force energy running smoothly. Best-selling author Sonia Choquette explains it quite well in her book “True Balance” with the following statement:

“Our energy system governs our energetic and psychic well-being. This system includes our foundation and survival instincts, our vitality and emotional sensations, our will and personal sovereignty, our ability to give and receive love, our creative expression, our psychic awareness and personal vision, and our capacity to connect with our Creator.” Several secondary chakras exist that practitioners of energy medicine are more familiar with, but for the purposes of this page, we will stick with the primary 7.

If you’re familiar at all with chakra teachings, you’ll already be familiar with the fact that each of the “spinning wheels“ of energy are associated with a color, a location on your body (which typically coincides with some organ of your endocrine system), and an overall theme of expression that the chakra governs. For example:

Name of Chakra

Color

Location/Organ

Theme

Root Chakra

Red

Base of Tailbone

SURVIVAL, GROUNDING, PRIMAL NEEDS

Second Chakra / Sacral Chakra

Orange

Approximately 3″ below the navel; associated with the reproductive organs, skin and natural 5 senses.

SENSUALITY, CREATIVITY, VITALITY

Solar Plexus Chakra

Yellow

Solar plexus; associated with the “gut”, stomach, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, etc.

PERSONAL POWER, IDENTITY & SOVEREIGNTY

Heart Chakra

Green

Located at the Heart; Thymus gland

LOVE, FORGIVENESS, CONNECTING LOWER SELF TO HIGHER SELF

Throat Chakra

Light Blue

Neck; associated with thyroid/parathyroid and speech-related anatomy

COMMUNICATION, CONNECTION, OUR VOICE IN THE WORLD

Third Eye Chakra / Bridge

Indigo

VISION, INTUITION, PERCEPTION, DISCERNMENT

Crown Chakra

Purple/White

Very top of head. Associated with pineal gland.

CONNECTION TO GOD, TO SPIRIT, OUR HIGHEST SELF

Just like the wheels of a car, our 7 chakras can become out of alignment and need some chakra balancing.

More and more people discovering that what ails them is more psychic (meaning “of the soul”) and spiritual in nature than physical. But it’s spelled out in the very language we use almost every day. Again, author Sonia Choquette teaches so wonderfully about it in her book “True Balance” as she points out common phrases we use and how they indicate where we may have a chakra balancing problem preventing us from living our best lives. Have you ever said the following?

  • He broke my heart (heart chakra)
  • He’s a pain in the neck (throat chakra)
  • I’m speechless with rage (throat chakra)
  • She galls me (gallbladder… solar plexus chakra)
someone who’s constantly overriding your authority
  • He knocked me off my feet (root chakra)
some new love who disrupts routine and threatens our grounding

So how do you know when you’re out of balance?

Well if you’re feeling stuck, insecure and doubting yourself; if you feel shaken to your core (ungrounded, or “root chakra”) or stifled in your creativity (second chakra/sacral chakra), if you’re suffering from a reduced capacity to love yourself or others, experiencing isolation, feeling devalued, silenced or unable to express yourself clearly or thwarted in your connection to God — you probably need your chakras balanced.

It’s impossible to have one of your 7 chakras imbalanced without it affecting all the others.

And as we stated earlier, the chakras ALSO affect your physiological well being too. Your adrenals, your pituitary, your reproductive glands, your liver and heart — all these are affected by chakra balance or lack thereof because of our mind, body & spirit interconnection. We are a whole. A synergy of parts, not the sum of them.

We will be posting more about each of the 7 chakras. In the meantime, please check out our book recommendations below:
